Get Cooking with Convection
When planning for my kitchen renovation, one of the decisions I had to make was what type of oven I wanted to have. After doing a bit of research, I ultimately decided to purchase a double convection oven - and boy do I love it! Let me tell you why.
First of all, simply having two ovens to work with is awesome! If I am cooking a ham and want to bake some rolls, for example, I can cook them both at the same time without having to sacrifice the quality of either item. After all, I have two completely separate ovens to work with!
In my case, the top oven is a convection oven and the bottom one is a standard electric oven. I have to be honest and say that the convection oven has seen a whole lot more activity than the standard oven. One of the reasons is the fact that the convection oven is able to cook much faster than the standard oven. Sure, it takes playing around with the cooking time a little in order to figure out how long something needs to cook, but it really hasn’t been much of a problem. If a recipe is supposed to take an hour, for example, I will usually check on it about 15 minutes before that one hour is complete. Often the item is done or almost done within that timeframe, depending upon what I am cooking.
Another great feature of a convection oven is the fact that I can cook on multiple racks at one time. My oven has the option of setting it to multi-rack or single rack. If I set it to multi-rack, I can cook several items all at once without having to rotate the item or switch the racks around. So, if you are baking cookies, you can throw three trays of cookies into the oven at one time and let them all cook to perfection without having to move them around halfway through. Not only that, they get done faster too!
Although, from my experience, cooking three racks of cookies takes about the same amount of time you would normally cook one. For example, if the recipe calls for cooking them for 10 minutes, it will probably take that long if you have three racks going at one time. If you cook just one rack of cookies, on the other hand, it will probably take only about 8 minutes for them to get done in a convection oven.
Convection ovens also cook at a lower temperature than the standard oven. Mine is set to automatically deduct the extra degrees from a standard recipe, so I don’t have to do the math myself. Not only that, it is able to cook my foods more thoroughly, so things such as roasts get cooked all the way through without a problem.
After my experience with my convection oven, I would choose to have only a convection oven if I couldn’t have a double oven. So, if you don’t have the space or the room in your budget for a double model, I would recommend going convection.
